Science Museum

The first thing you see on entering the Science museum is a large beam engine and, to your right, the very attractively laid out museum shop. But worry not, you can't leave without passing it again! This place is so large I'm still discovering new areas after many years of visiting.

Downstairs in the basement you'll find a cafe where they don't mind you eating your sandwiches and, as long as your visit doesn't coincide with a couple of schools, there's plenty of room. Also down here is a great little area for the toddlers (but not for Brownies!)

Again downstairs is 'Launch Pad', a highly interactive area where the young people can burn off lots of energy. If you have a look at the website you'll also find information on events which take place down here regularly - the staff really make science great fun!

Upstairs in the main galleries there really isn't anything man made that you can't find somewhere (if you look hard enough) - so an ideal place to visit if you're looking to reinforce some element of a meeting or interest badge.

The shop not only sells the usual pocket money souvenirs like pencil, bugs and rubbers, but also a great range of functional 'gadgets' which are well priced and ideal as presents for children of all ages.

The museum is easily reached by train; SW Trains then change to the District line at Wimbledon and get off at South Kensington. From here there's a pedestrian tunnel direct to the street entrance (about 15 minutes), then turn right for a 30 second walk in the open to the main entrance.

A good day's visit -see their website, and if you want to see something specific or book one of the workshop sessions, have a chat with the education section on 020 7942 4777 (weekdays during school hours).
